Maarten 't Hart

Maarten 't Hart Born in 1950 in Amersfoort. After high school he was a sail and tent-maker, and then decided to study art in Utrecht. He found modern abstract art too limited in its possibilies, wanted to make more of a landscape than one line for a horizon, and turned back to the figurative approach.

't Hart is a realist in the Dutch tradition, especially proficient as a draughtsman. Good drawings underly all his paintings, whether of train stations, a bicycle saddle or a church interior. He paints with tempera because it dries faster than oil. His style is realistic without being photographic -- in fact, some paintings even border on the absurd.
