Henk Helmantel (1945) was born in Westeremden. This son of a market gardener, who stared open-mouthed at
the remarkable paintings by Rembrandt when he visited a museum for the first time, knew one thing for sure.
He would become a painter. He attended the art academy in Groningen and diligently set himself to work in his
studio, day after day. Helmantel became one of the greatest painters in the country.
The lion’s share of this book is made up of more than 190 paintings by Henk Helmantel – 100 of which are previously unpublished.
